10 Unbelievably Beautiful Sea Creatures

Our planet is filled with astonishing beauty and wonder. From the smallest blade of grass to the tallest mountain, or from the tiniest of ants to the mightiest whale, every day we see amazing things, often without realising.

Our oceans are a whole different world in themselves. Mysterious and enchanting, it’s almost as though there is magic waiting underneath every wave.

They’re so unimaginably vast that we haven’t even discovered everything yet, and it’s unlikely that we ever will. So far, we’ve explored and charted less than 5% of our oceans, while scientists estimate that 91% of ocean species are yet to be classified.

Here are 10 unbelievably beautiful sea creatures we’ve been lucky enough to discover that will leave you in awe!

Blue Whale

Starting off our list big and strong is the blue whale. Their size is equally as impressive as their singing voices - their deep, low-frequency trills are loud enough to be heard for hundreds of miles underwater. These magnificent creatures weigh anywhere between 130,000-150,000kg and are roughly the size of 3 buses!

Mandarin Fish

The Mandarin Fish is a small, brightly coloured fish that is native to the Pacific Ocean. They’re known for their stunningly vibrant scales, showcasing bright blues mixed with orange, green and yellow. This peaceful species of fish can often be found drifting near coral reefs.

Sea Turtle

Sea Turtles have been swimming in the ocean for over 100 million years, yet they are still just as awe-inspiring as they were then. With their graceful movements and ancient wisdom, they remind us of the incredible power of nature. Living up to 80 years old, sea turtles are not only known for their amazing longevity, but also their impressive migration patterns. They're able to travel long distances between their feeding and nesting grounds, travelling for thousands of miles! Leatherback sea turtles are known as the deepest diving sea turtles, descending to depths of 4,200 feet in search of their favourite food - jellyfish.

Seahorse

Seahorses are tiny, delicate creatures loved for their unique horse-like appearance and graceful movements. They are the only known species in the world in which the males can undergo pregnancy and give birth to young. Seahorses are found in shallow waters all over the world and are often seen floating among seaweed or other vegetation.

Leafy Sea Dragon

The leafy sea dragon is a close relative of the seahorse and is found only in the waters off the southern and western coasts of Australia. Like seahorses, the males are also able to get pregnant and bear offspring. Its name comes from the leaf-like projections that cover its body which make it look like floating seaweed. These projections help leafy sea dragons blend in perfectly with their surroundings, making it difficult for predators to spot it.

Sea Slug

The Sea Slug is a small eye-catching creature that can be found in oceans all over the world. Despite its unassuming name and being venomous, the Sea Slug is one of the most breathtaking creatures in the ocean. Its coloration can range from bright pink to deep purple, and it often has intricate patterns and funky designs on its body.
