If your digestion feels a bit different these days (think: a little more bloated, a little less regular, generally a bit off between the good bits), you're not imagining it, and you're not doing anything wrong.
Your gut genuinely behaves differently in the heat. The reassuring part, which we'll get to, is that your body is built for exactly this kind of seasonal change.
Here's what's actually going on beneath the surface.
Your gut has seasons, and a body clock
Two things most people don't realise about their gut:
It changes with the seasons. Literally!
When researchers tracked the Hadza hunter-gatherers of Tanzania across a full year, they found the community's gut bacteria shifted measurably from wet season to dry season. Some microbes all but vanished in one season and reappeared in the next, tracking what food was available.
Your microbiome isn't a fixed thing you either have or ruin. It moves with your life, and it's designed to.
It runs on a 24-hour clock. Your gut bacteria rise and fall on a daily rhythm. Their numbers and activity literally changes day and night. The same research found that disrupting that rhythm (aka going through the jet lag) throws the whole cycle out of sync.
Which is why late dinners, lie-ins and long-haul flights can leave your digestion feeling scrambled: you've moved the clock your gut was keeping time to.
So a gut that feels different in August than it did in February is doing precisely what it evolved to do.
Why summer nudges things off
A few things stack up in the warmer months:
Heat and dehydration
You lose more water through sweat than you notice, and how hydrated you are changes how quickly things move through you. Your gut lining also depends on being well-hydrated to do its job.
Alcohol on the gut lining
Cold wine and spritzes climb in summer, and alcohol can irritate the intestinal barrier and nudge the microbiome off balance.
The drifting body clock
Circle back to that daily rhythm: holiday time zones, midnight dinners and no real routine all disrupt the timing your gut runs on.
Less variety on the plate
Eating out and grazing on the go usually means a narrower range of plants than your normal week, and plant variety is exactly what feeds a healthy microbiome (more on this below).
That puffy feeling
Heat widens your blood vessels, which can leave a little extra fluid pooling in your tissues. Add saltier holiday food and you get that bloated-but-not-from-a-meal puffiness, which is water, not fat, and passes.
The good news: summer is genuinely good for your gut, too
This isn't a season to fear. Some of what summer does is actively brilliant for your digestion:
More plants, more diversity
Summer is peak season for fresh produce, and variety is the single most useful thing you can give your gut. In the American Gut Project (aka one of the largest microbiome studies ever run), people who ate more than 30 different types of plant a week had noticeably more diverse gut microbiomes than those eating fewer than 10.
Different plants feed different bacteria, and those bacteria turn fibre into short-chain fatty acids that nourish your gut lining and help keep inflammation low. Summer makes hitting that variety genuinely easy.
Sunlight, and vitamin D
Longer days mean more vitamin D, which is linked to a more diverse gut microbiome and more beneficial bacteria. A connection most people never make.
More movement
You walk, swim and potter about more in summer, and being active is associated with a richer gut ecosystem: one well-known study found professional rugby players had markedly more diverse gut bacteria, than matched non-athletes.
Your gut and liver have got this
Here's the bit worth saying plainly, because the internet won't: you do not need a cleanse. Not a green-juice-only week, not a "flush," not a cupboard of detox teas. Your liver, kidneys, gut lining and skin already remove what your body doesn't need. Continuously, for free, whether you buy anything or not.
A critical review of detox diets found no sound evidence that any of them eliminate "toxins" or do anything your own organs aren't already doing.
What actually helps
Your gut responds far better to gentle, steady, doable habits than to a dramatic reset. Competence, not punishment.
Count plants, not calories
Aim for variety across the week. A new fruit, a handful of different veg, some nuts, seeds and herbs. Herbs and spices count. It's the most enjoyable gut-health goal there is, and summer hands it to you.
Hydrate properly, not just more
Plain water helps, but a pinch of salt and a squeeze of citrus helps your body actually hold onto it. (Here's our 30-second summer hydrator if you want the recipe.)
Give your gut an anchor
Roughly regular meal times, or your usual morning habit, keeps that internal clock ticking even when the rest of the day is gloriously loose.
Eat a little slower
Bloating is often as much about how you eat as what. Wolfing food down means swallowing air and under-chewing. Slowing down is a free, genuinely effective fix people forget.
Move after you eat
A short walk helps things along. And for a heavy, puffy evening, ten minutes with your legs up the wall is a nice low-effort reset.
Your gut, like the sea it comes from, works in tides. It shifts with the season, then settles again. Enjoy the summer. Your body knows what it's doing; a few gentle habits are all it takes to feel good through it.
